12/30/2023 0 Comments Nottingham castle historyThere also isn't much to the grounds so there isn't much to explore around the museum. The only real downside was that it wasn't a castle and calling it Nottingham Castle is very misleading. I would say it's great for children of 5 and above, especially if they have an interest in history and art. We honestly could have spent much longer there but our youngest is 3 and there wasn't quite enough for a child that age. We spent about 2.5 hours there (including a 30min snack break). As we were going to do the city of caves later we decided against doing this one so I can't comment on how good it is (having done the city of caves tour, we now regret that choice and wish we'd done this one and skipped the other!). They have a cave tour for an additional £5. Outside is an OK sized adventure playground. Pre-history The middle Trent Valley was covered by ice sheets for large parts of the Paleolithic period between 500,000 and 10,000 years ago, and evidence of early human activity is limited to a small number of discarded stone artefacts found in glacial outwash or boulder clays. In medieval times, it served as the residency for the royalties in the kingdom. It has outfits for the little ones to dress up as Robin hood and Co, there are videos talking about Robin hood and there are games for kids to play (games like the ones you get on the Nintendo wii for archery and staff fighting). Nottingham City Council: Site history Built: 1068: Built by: William the Conqueror William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle: In use: Museum and art gallery: Events: English Civil War: Nottingham Castle is an old fortified castle, built in Nottingham of England. The sub basement level is where the Robin hood part of the castle. ![]() It was about the history of rebellions that took place in Nottingham, made up of interactive displays and lots of fascinating history. The basement level was my personal favourite. On the top floor is art galleries, on the middle floor is a history of Nottinghams armed forces (this floor is smaller than the rest and is only a few small rooms of displays), on the ground floor they had a temporary exhibit and a small cafe. ![]() There is basically 5 levels to the museum. Having managed expectations, this is a very good museum with several different types of display. There is just a small segment of castle walls where the entrance is but other than that it is basically a museum. Have to agree with everyone else complaining about how it's not a castle.
